Mavelikkara Block Panchayat: Geography, Agriculture, and Environment
Located in the Mavelikkara Taluk of Alappuzha district, Mavelikkara Block Panchayat is situated in Onattukara, a prominent traditional agricultural region in Kerala. Consequently, this block panchayat embodies all the unique environmental and cultural characteristics of the Onattukara region.
 

 
📍 Topography and Geographical Layout
  • Headquarters Elevation: The block headquarters is situated at approximately 8.5 meters above sea level.

  • Coordinates: The block is geographically located at Latitude 9°15' N and Longitude 76°32' E.

  • Terrain Features: The region is predominantly a flat terrain. However, certain areas of Thazhakara Panchayat exhibit higher, hilly characteristics. The landscape is generally uniform, free from high mountain ranges or deep valleys.

  • Tiered Land Structure: Although it is mostly a plain, the agricultural lands are arranged into five distinct tiers:

    • Wetlands (Punja Fields): The lowest tier of land, crucial for water containment.

    • Low-lying Fields (Thara Lands): Positioned just above the Punja fields.

    • Residential Compounds (Purayidams): The upper-tier plots where houses and cattle sheds are built.

  • Crop Distribution by Tier: The higher residential plots host long-term perennial crops like coconut, mango, jackfruit, and cashew trees. They are also used to cultivate seasonal crops such as tapioca (cassava), taro, elephant foot yam, ginger, turmeric, vegetables, and bananas. Parts of Thazhakara and Thekkekara Panchayats feature this elevated terrain.

 

 
💧 Water Retention and Watersheds
  • Waterlogging: Water remains logged in standard paddy fields for 8 months of the year, and for all 12 months in the lowest Punja fields.

  • Rainfall: The region receives high annual rainfall, averaging between 2,500 mm to 3,200 mm. It experiences two major monsoon seasons: Edavappathi (Southwest Monsoon) and Thulavarsham (Northeast Monsoon), alongside occasional summer showers.

  • Emerging Water Crisis: While severe drought was historically unknown here, recent summers have triggered severe drinking water shortages. This scarcity is actively felt in Thazhakara Panchayat, the eastern pockets of Thekkekara Panchayat, and Chettikulangara Panchayat.

  • Topographical Shift: Land degradation has accelerated recently due to the unscientific digging of hills to extract soil, which is then used to landfill natural wetlands and paddy fields. This alters the local topography, threatening severe future water scarcity, environmental imbalance, and deforestation.

 

 
🚜 Land Use and Agriculture
Agriculture and livestock rearing are deeply integrated. Traditionally, structured crop rotations ensured continuous income for farmers and steady employment for agricultural laborers year-round.

Current Agricultural Challenges:
  • Declining Paddy Fields: Cultivable space is fully utilized and fallow land is minimal. However, the area dedicated to rice cultivation has dropped drastically, now accounting for less than 30% of available land.

  • Coconut Cultivation Crisis: Although the area under coconut cultivation has grown, the overall yield has stagnated. Pest infestations and low market pricing have caused farmers to lose interest in maintaining coconut groves.

  • Rubber Fluctuations: The area under rubber cultivation initially expanded but has since shrunk. No dedicated scientific studies have been conducted to evaluate the ecological impact of rubber farming on the specific Onattukara ecosystem.

 

 
🌳 Ecosystem and Environmental Degradation
Historically, the region maintained a highly balanced, unique ecosystem. It was an interconnected network where paddy fields, residential compounds, houses, cattle sheds, sacred groves (Kavukal), ponds, and places of worship coexisted harmoniously.
Today, this landscape is facing severe environmental destruction:
  • Wetland Reclamation: Large-scale reclamation of low-lying wetlands is rapidly altering the terrain. Natural ecosystems and paddy fields that evolved over centuries are being casual destroyed by human interference.

  • Sustainable Legacy: In contrast to modern practices, traditional farmers prioritized environmental conservation and designed highly sustainable farming systems to preserve the ecosystem.

 

 
🐍 Sacred Groves (Kavukal) and Traditional Ponds
The unique soil and topography of Onattukara demand an abundance of green manure (organic foliage) and water for stable agriculture. Recognizing this, ancestors preserved numerous sacred groves and local ponds.
  • Ecological Role of Sacred Groves: Serpent groves (Sarppakavukal) and their internal ponds preserved rich biodiversity and acted as natural groundwater rechargers. Strict religious taboos—such as forbidding iron tools from touching the trees—were clever ancestral methods designed to protect these virgin forests.

  • Traditional Domestic Water Management: Historically, a single household often maintained three separate ponds:

    1. One exclusively for drinking water.

    2. One for bathing.

    3. One for washing cattle and livestock.

  • Agricultural Water Networks: Agricultural fields were supported by upstream source ponds (Thalakkulangal), downstream tail-end ponds (Vaalkulangal), dedicated water channels (Chaalukal), and marshy channel plots (Chaalukandangal).

  • The Consequences of Destructive Landfilling: These traditional ponds and channels were the ancient blueprints for modern rainwater harvesting pits. Landfilling these water bodies has caused the regional water table to drop, decimated local biodiversity, and distorted the topography. It is estimated that over 50% of the historical rice fields have been reclaimed, destroying natural water reservoirs, reducing water storage capacity, and inviting drought.

  • Clay Mining and Brick Kilns: Another severe environmental threat is the rampant mining of fertile clay from paddy fields for industrial brick manufacturing. This practice has completely destroyed vast stretches of agricultural fields in the Mannar and Karipuzha regions. Timely environmental conservation initiatives are critical to prevent these ecological damages from impacting future generations.

 

 
🛶 Stream and Canal Networks (Thodukal)
The block area features a highly sophisticated network of large streams and minor canals designed for efficient drainage.
  • The Arteries of Agriculture: These streams functioned as the circulatory system for local farms, protecting the entire region from flash floods during heavy monsoons.

  • Modern Crisis: Today, most of these canals are heavily silted, choked, or entirely filled in. As a result, sudden flash floods and subsequent widespread crop destruction have become a frequent occurrence.
